I'm wanting to purchase a USB scanner, and hopefully a cheap one at that. I was looking at that $99 Canon, it may be the one-touch, I don't recall, but I need a good scanner at a good price, so offer me some suggestions please.

I've used UMAX's MX-3... it's about $100 and performs well for such a scanner.
No experience with the Canon, sorry.

First of all, don't get the new thinner types of scanners, their scanning quality is just bad, compared to the conventional ones.
Second, I wouldn't/don't trust any perpherials from a company other than HP or Epson...(and probably Umax for scanners...)I've only heard quality problems with Cannons and what-not...The Epson Perfection 636U is a great scanner, and Buy.com has it for US$84 (backordered though, but cheap...).

Hi,
I bought total of three scanners in my life, Microtek ScanMaker E3 for my PowerPC Performa 6116CD, NEC Petiscan for my sister iBook, and UMAX Astra 2200 for my iMac Rev.A. The first two models work flawlessly, but the UMAX one keeps crashing my iMac. I'm runing MacOS 9.0.4 and the latest UMAX driver, I contacted UMAX and asked for a full refund. Now, the scanner is gone and I'm looking for those scanner from Canon. The Oct. 2000 issue of MacAddict has a good review on the CanoScan N656U model, it costs around $129. I agree Evangellydonut that both HP and Epson made good products and good customer services, but I want a slim and small footprint scanner since I'm living in a dorm.

If you get a MicroTek and it works then you are fine (I have one that works) but do not EVER expect any help/updates from that company they have the poorest most non-existant customer service I have ever seen! I just installed a Umax 2100U on an iMac and it works great!

I have an Epson 1200U Photo scanner. It is a little more than you want to pay but it is a very good USB scanner.
I suggest buying a scanner based on what the end result of your scans will be, not price. You may be disappointed.

I have the MicroTek X6, and its awesome - perfect quality.
Its a little slow, but thats my only gripe with it... (but then, I don't know how fast other scanners are, so it may not be comparitively slow at all...)
