I am using a Motorola cable modem through my ethernet port of my iMac and would like to free the ethernet port and use it for connecting to another mac using a crossover cable. The cable modem also has a USB connection, but there is only a windows driver and no Mac driver. Are there any drivers out there to drive it?

You'd be better off buying a 5 port Ethernet hub. Connect the cable modem to the uplink port on the hub, and any Macs to the other ports. USB is to slow.

Actually, USB is fast enough for cable modem connections. But yeah, if you have multiple connections like that, ethernet hub is worth investing into...'bout US$50 for a 4-8 port 100bt hub...
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

Thanks for your proposal, but I was just hoping to save the $50 or so, by using the USB port of the modem.

And most cable companies want to charge you extra $$$ each month if you hook your cable modem up to a hub, or else you won't be able to do it, cause they make it so your cable modem only talks to a network card with a specific MAC address. I've never heard of software to use a USB port for in internet connection, USB is not a choicein teh TCPIP control panel, sorry

Well, the thing is that the modem comes with a Windows driver for the USB port, but no MacOS driver in agreement to what the provider advertizes. My idea is not to connect several computers to the same cable modem (You're correct. The provider would like some extra DMs for such a configuration), but to connect two computers by a crossover ethernet cable for file sharing. I am just taking advantage of the real estate of three screens. I find permanently open help files very handy, for example. Or HTML source code and browser display, ... At least as my iMac cannot have an additional monitor. Right now, I working by (un-) plugging the ethernet cables. Not really the solution I like.
