I was wondering if any usb optical mouse work with my G4?? I don't care if all the buttons function I just want to know if it will allow point and click functionality without drivers.
I found this optical usb mouse for $25:

if you install those M$ Intellimouse-Explorer drivers, it should work...but that's only in theory, I haven't personally tried it or anything...
Remember one thing though, the biggest reason I'm holding back on going optical is that it doesn't handle FPS (first person shooter games) well enough...

G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...

I recently purchased a Logitech MouseMan USB optical with the scroll wheel(also a button) and a forth thumb button. It works great on my G4 running Mac OS 9.0.4 and Linux. Logitech just released an upgrade to the MouseWorks software (v. 3.5.1) and it resolved some minor issues.
On the Mac it will function as a single button mouse if you don't install the driver software. On linux it functions as a three button mouse right 'out of the box' with Linux' built in drivers.
I'm not a hardcore gamer, but it seems to work just fine with Unreal Tournament.
As a side note: I don't know how I lived without that scroll wheel for so long. It's absolutely fantastic and so is this Logitech mouse.

I just got the optical Apple Pro mouse for my iMac (The same one that comes with virtually all new Macs) And it works great! No roblems at all. Not even minor ones. Didn't even have to install any new drivers.
It doesn't get much easier than that...

True, but with one button and no scroll wheel it doesn't get much less-practical, either!
I love my 5 button + scroll IntelliMouse Explorer...

I just bought the Kensington Optical Pro mouse, and it's fantastic. I also installed USB Overdrive (www.usboverdrive.com) which is shareware and costs only $20, and I can make full use of the other buttons and scroll wheel) I really like this. I really don't like the Kensington software because it adds all sorts of extensions that only screw up something else, plus since it's a Kensington "universal" software (which should detect other Kengsington hardware) it's prone to crashing my system, hence my use of USB Overdrive.
I was serious abou the Apple mouse, but its $20 more and well lets face it, its only one button (if that).
Now only if Kensington would release a nice keyboard!
