Apple and their firewire standard are gonna be in trouble if they don't manage to get an update soon (as in, 800mbps firewire). This is because USB 2.0 is gonna take over if they don't watch out. Now the issue isn't to get next gen. firewire out for the sake of the Mac market, since Mac users already believe in firewire. The problem is, with Apple's 5% market share, people developing devices that need a high speed IO (manufacturers of camcorders, mp3 players, etc) don't frankly give a damn what standard Apple is using. They want to be sure to be compatible with the rest of the computer industry. If the rest of the industry decides to turn to USB 2.0 and drop firewire support, Apple's in trouble.

USB 2.0 is already out, and yet I don't see any devices (well, not many at least) optimized for it.

until all sony dv cameras switch from 1394 to usb 2.0, i think firewire is here to stay.
by the way, this post wasn't spurred on by the news story from the MacNN news page, was it? because that article is from like November, it's a pretty old story...

It's already too late. The big consumer electronics companies have already invested too much money in firewire; and it's standard, HAVi, is already here. Mitsubishi's NetCommand is nothing more than their name for HAVi. Good luck, Intel.
