I have to replace my scanner and would like some recommendations. I have a G4/450, one of the early models.
Thanks for the help

I'd recommend the Epson 1650. Everything a non-professional could possibly need. Fastest on the market, 1600 optical resolution, Photoshop Elements, robust hardware, true 48-bit color depth, all for less than $200.
If compactness and USB-power are important to you, the Canon 1240U is very good, if not as good as the Epson.
HP, Umax, Microtek also make some good products but I see little reason to look beyond the Epson.
If you do much retouching, beware of units that advertise 48-bits but only send 24 to the computer.
Don't buy an Agfa - they just abandoned the consumer market.

the Canon scanners are excellent - bus-powered and hot-pluggable like a good USB device should be.
great Photoshop plugin also...

I'll second the recommendation on the Epson 1650. Very good color depth, easy to use software. Great value for the money! I'm an amateur photographer, and I've owned a Umax and an Epson in the past year; the Epson does a great job. I also sell Macs, etc., and have tested several scanners recently. My brother in law bought an HP, which is ok for general use, but if you want good and accurate color depth, it's Epson.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?
