I am not clear if the ipod can transfer songs back to a mac without using it in HD mode.

I currently have my songs on an old PB whose ethernet does not work. Once I have all my music on my ipod, is it possible to transfer these songs to a new mac (as I won't be able to use my ethernet connection)?

Thanks

If you move the MP3 files manually to the iPod hard drive, you can move them to any Mac you want, as you would any other file. However, the iPod won't play them.

The iPod will only play songs that have been downloaded to it via iTunes2. When they have been dowloaded to the iPod via iTunes2, you can't upload them to another Mac. You can only do that if you move them manually.

Ok ... so in effect I can download to the ipod but not upload back to another Mac. Unless the music files are moved manually onto the ipod HD as if it were any data file in which case they would no be playable on the ipod.

Is that correct?

No no no! You can put back music from the iPod to another mac without the disk mode. Remember, it syncs to iTunes in 3 ways:
- Autosync iPod
- Autosync selected playlists
- Manual

In manual mode, you can transfer back to any mac to iTunes (and to your Music library folders). Probably just a drag and drop thing...

Actually, I thought that iPod couldn't do this UNLESS it were in HD mode. The Synch only works with a primary computer. If you want it to synch with another computer, I thought you had to first designate that computer as the primary computer and then the synch only happens from that computer onto the iPod. Essentially, changes can only be made on the computer and it's those changes that are made that get synched to the iPod.

Then again, there is that iPFFA application too

I am pretty sure that only the AUTO-SYNC only works on your primary computer. Manual syncs should work. Those lucky bastards who already received their iPods could put some light on this...

No, manual sync just means you can move songs from the Mac to the iPod manually. Trying to drag a playlist or a song from the iPod to the Mac's iTunes playlist does not work.

Sherlock can see the invisible hidden mp3 files if I mount iPod as firewire HD.

I haven't tried to copy them.

Well i dont have mine yet, but i would assume that in X.1 one could use the Terminal and go to /Volumes after you mount the iPod as a FW HD. It should be there, and they cant "hide" a directory in the terminal, even if it starts with a "." an ls -a would show it to you. Seems like a very simple "hack" for X to get those mp3s back off the ipod.

I just fund out.
It was very easy.
Just download TinkerTool (Root to install) and show invisible files.
Then mount iPod as HD and open it.
Then go -> iPod_Control -> Music.
And now you may see a lot of folders of MP3. (I have 4GIG of mp3 now)
Then you can just drag what ever the MP3 you want and drop it to another HD.
You don't have to be a root to do this.
That's it!!!
