I have a just discontinued G4 AGP. The manual says I can use various ATA (also called IDE or EIDE) and Ultra ATA devices (also called DMA).
What will be the fastest? Will I notice the difference between 5400 and 7200rpm?
Does Ultra /DMA 100 buy me anything? Do Ultra /DMA 100 drives work (not speciafially listed in the manual)?
I plan to use the internal slot to add 30 or more GB depending on the price and trade-offs. Many approx $100 drives being advertised.
I have an an old SCSI drive via a SCSI card, but isn't very robust. The drive keeps going away. Suspect problems with the drive as it was a bit flaky in my old computer.
My needs are varied. I don't do anything consistently enough to define a general usage. But launching and opening files faster would always be better, but not critical. I have 192MB which is more than adequate.

I just installed an IBM 75GXT 45GB HD on my G4 ($220 from www.buy.com). Works really good.
I suspect that there won't be any difference between ATA 100 and ATA 66. This new drive is an ATA 100 and it works ok.

Be careful with the data on your old drive. I am having problems getting the data on the old drive after I mistakenly hooked both drives up as SLAVEs. One HAS to be Master and the other slave else bad things seem to occur.

Bracket and fullstop enclosed in URL tag... someone fix...
Whats the difference between the 75GXP and 75GXT?
An ATA/100 drive will work on an ATA/66 bus, just at the speed of ATA/66.
Yes, you will notice a difference between 7200 and 5400 - get the 7200, definately.
