I replaced the stock CDROM on my G3 466 DT (formerly 233) with a Yamaha
CRW 8424EZ (EIDE) - and can only get it to "partially" work.

If I use the current Apple CD/DVD Driver, then on startup, the Yamaha
opens its tray, and I can't close it - unless a CD is in there during
startup, in which case it stays closed until I eject the disk, then the
persistent open tray problem emerges.

If I use a patched version of Apple CD/DVD Driver 1.3.1, then the tray
stays closed, and the drive can be used to burn CDs, BUT - it won't
mount CDs.

I've tried keeping both drivers active, but then I get weird crashing
during startup (seeminingly at a different point each time), or freezing
right after startup.

Are there other drivers out there I should try?

Should I consider trading this drive in for a SCSI version? (Would it be
likely to be more compatible, as well as faster? I do have a U2W SCSI
card in my Mac)

Is there something else I may have missed that I should do?

Thanks,
Scott

It didn't come with it's own drivers? Well, the only other thing that I can think of is to make sure that you have it set correctally. ie. master or slave or single.

this is what i would try-
1. reinstall your stock apple cdrom and install toast if its not already installed
2. after toast is installed REMOVE/disable the apple cdrom driver as you should ONLY need the toast extension if you do NOT have the internal drive installed.
that should eliminate the problem if you do not desire to use the stock cdrom drive.
