Ok. I have a PS2 sitting in my room with 4 games, 2 controllers, and a memory card. Lately I've barely ever used it because I have been waiting for the newer games to come out. But I found console gaming has kind of lost my interest a little and the reliability of my Rio 500's Smartmedia slot is really getting to me. I know my PS2 and Rio 500 are worth AT LEAST $400, but should I take the plunge into iPod-dom and shed my teen skin of console gaming or let the system sit and hope to grab my attention again? (insert suspensful sounding music now.)

I'm facing the same choice you are, and I'm selling my PS2. Games lose their luster after you finish them or get bored with them, so I haven't played my PS2 in a couple months now. Meanwhile, I carry this stupid minidisc recorder to campus every day, which is an inconvenience to say the least. My PS2 was a fun toy and time-waster, but an iPod is something that'll get guaranteed usage from me every day, and it doesn't tempt me to take time out of school work.
To me, the choice is clear, but different strokes...

Hmmm... I like my minidisc recorder still. But the PS2? Could have been cool, should have been cool, but it just didn't do it for me. Mine sits unused as well. No good games - I played Tony Hawk 2 (for PS1) on it more than any PS2 games. Of course, now that Metal Gear Solid 2 is out...
Here is what I am going to do. Dump the PS2, get a Gamecube ($199) and let that novelty satisfy me until the iPod price drops a little, or gets a bigger hard drive, or something. Till then, my MD player will have to do.
