I need to get a new display. I'm a photographer so I've always used/trusted CRT monitors and avoided LCDs. I've been looking around for Sony/Mitsubishi, or anything comparable, but it seems like everything has been discontinued. Besides eBay, is there anywhere to get these monitors still? I still don't trust LCD displays for color work.

samsung makes some nice CRTs. check those out maybe on amazon, pricegrabber, tigerdirect, many more sites like these

I have an unused NEC 19" CRT in Chicago. How much are you looking to spend on a CRT? My old NEC went south just under 3 years after I got it and this is the replacement they sent me that I never used.

I'm a big fan of my Samsung 997df, it takes a bit of patience to calibrate but then it's good to go.

On a sidenote Sony's G520 is really nice, I know there's a company called azatek.com that has those and HP and Dell 1130's as they use the same tube.

I don't think there's any real reason to fear LCDs these days, neither CRT or LCD look exactly like print, they are different in how they vary, but as long as you're aware of that, it's just a different thing to get a feel for.

Wow, that thing is cheap. I know it has the trinitron tube and the .24 grille pitch and everything, but I can't believe a high class professional CRT can cost that little, refurbished or not. O_o

I'm also looking at Samsungs now. The 997DF looks alright but reviewers say it has trouble with blacks. The 1100MB looks more geared toward the graphics industry, or at least marketted that way, but I don't know if it has the same issues.

Wish I could go somewhere and try these out. : /

Just about anything with a Diamondtron or Trinitron tube will be really good.....thats why apple used them back in the B&W/Graphite days.

My 17" studio display STILL looks as clear & crisp as it did the day I got it back in '99

Samsung and Sony have great CRTs still. You can get a great Samsung for around $70-90 brand new. Also, Apple's CRT ADC Studio Displays have amazing quality and 2 USB ports if you have the ADC connector on your Mac.

well, i found a Diamond Pro 2040U for a good price, refurbished, so i went ahead with that. hope i found a gem and not a lemon.

AFAIK Nec-Mitsubishi are top notch CRTs, anybody surprise LaCie ecpensive CRTs were rebranded Nec-Mitsubishi with some added LaCie goodies…

When properly calibrated, either by eye or otherwise, that problem is resolved.

well the display came today and i just got it set up. the box was 90lb.s and i had to get help taking it up 2 flights of stairs lol.

so far so good. first thing i did was calibrate it. i was afraid of what i'd think of the aperture grille lines, since i was using a shadow mask tube before, but they're not even noticeable unless i look for them over a white background. i've heard the lines on mitsuishi's are more faint.

anyway, i'm happy. this will be the last CRT i own by the looks of it.
