How can I format an IDE drive for use in a Performa 636CD. I have Silverlinings and have been told to use that but it looks for SCSI devices. I only get the option to clear free space or optimize. I tried to call Silverlinings but have been on hold for over 1/2 hour.

Depending upon what version of MacOS you are using, you can probably format it with Apple's Drive Setup program (in the utilities folder of your MacOS CD, or startup disk). OS8 and above are able to format most IDE drives.

Thanks - I have 8.5 and I'll try that. But -the computer I'm working on will be set up with 7.6 - do you know if that is a problem?

It shouldn't be a problem -- just make sure you format it using Mac OS Standard format, not Extended.
