I have a beige G3 with a 2 port Macally USB card installed, also an Asante USB hub. My Epson USB printer is plugged into one of the card ports; Superdisk, Agfa scanner, and modem are plugged into the hub, which is plugged into the other open port on the card. The overcurrent lights are always on, whether I only have the hub plugged into the computer or if I also plug in it's AC adaptor. My new USB modem complained that there was not enough power when I tried powering the hub just off the computer, which is why added the hub's AC. Everything seems to be working ok...do I have a reason to worry? What's the deal with overpower anyway...cannot find anything about this anywhere.

I don't know what the overpower light is supposed to indicate, but from the discussions I've seen on USB hubs, it's better to buy one that has it's own power supply, as the power the hub draws from the computer through the USB connection is usually not enough to power multiple devices.

The lights don't indicate total power being drawn but rather the amount data that's being transferred over the USB bus.

When the USB bus is overloaded it's detrimental to USB performance.

The power and overpower indicators on the Asante hub are not adequately isolated from one another. When viewing the hub from the front, at a typical seating height, all of the overpower indicators appear to be active. If you view the hub from above, you will most likely see that only the power indicators are active, with light bleed-through making the lower overpower indicators falsely appear to be active when viewed from the front.

It's a poor design feature on an otherwise acceptable hub.
