Since upgrading to 9.0.4, I cannot insert a smart media card without a complete freze of my iMacDV. File exchange is on. Any suggestions?

I've got a Lexar media digital film reader, which seems to work fine under 9.04, maybe the drivers for it will work with the CameraMate (seeing as they usually all use the same chip, but have a different case ?)

I understand that Cameramate is incompatible with OS 9.0.4. A work around is to turn VM off.

Turning VM off does indeed solve the problem for me, as Frank wrote.

Turning off VM doesn't work for me (I never had it on). That was the suggestion I got from MicroTech but I haven't heard back from them after I indicated it didn't wasn't the cause of my problem.

Have you tried the Lexar drivers goldtop ? I would be interested to hear if the CameraMate & Lexar's Universal Digital Film reader are basically the same hardware.

I'm another who found that turning off VM allows the USB CameraMate to work. I do wish they'd fix the problem though, so I don't have to keep rebooting.

I've tried the Lexar drivers and they don't recognize the reader. Seem to be a whole different setup.

Oh well, pity about the other drivers, at least we know they are actually different mechanisms though. (A lot of the USB gadgets are made by one manufacturer and re-badged), and as the Lexar one works, we can only assume that its possible to work one under 9.04 and the CameraMate will be fixed soon.

I contacted Microteck as last week regarding a fix and was told one was in the works but no date was given. I was in the market to buy a Cameramate but decided to wait until new drivers are released or look at another brand that does work.

this, from MicroTech: "The CameraMate is compatible with OS 9.0.4. All that you have to do is to turn off virtual memory and then reboot. Also make sure that you are not plugging the USB into a USB hub. Plug the USB into the port on the computer. The virtual memory problem is a problem with the Mac OS and not the product. We do not have a patch or a fix for this. Apple should be working on it. Try watching the Apple Web site for a fix."

and: "William Du Bois found that disabling Conflict Catcher fixed his problems with CameraMate under Mac OS 9.0.2 (or 9.0.4). We have no other confirming reports of this. In fact, Joe Milligan reports no problems at all with CameraMate and Mac OS 9.0.4 on his G3/266 - even though virtual memory is on and Conflict Catcher is installed. Go figure."

{all of the above was taken in whole from Macfixit, today}

Indeed, turning off virtual memory allowed the cameramate to work again. However, it is plugged into a hub.

My newly purchased USB Cameramate arrived this morning. I am using it with a G4/400 running OS 9.0.4. I expected and do have the same problems others are having with OS 9.0.4 (i.e., will not work unless VM is turned off and even then, will not transfer more than one photo without causing the Mac to freeze.

The main reason for this post is that I have found a work around for the transfer/freeze issue when trying copy files. After mounting the Smartcard with the Cameramate, I set up Synchronize! to copy all the files from the Smartcard to a folder on my hard disk.

This works with no problems. I do wish that Microtech would get this no VM use thing straightened out; it is a pain to keep rebooting each time you want to load photos from a Smartcard.

Hope this is some help for someone with the same problem.

Frank
