I am in need of a medium / high quality proofing system for a very small graphic design firm (about nine of us total). We want to primarily use it for magazine / newspaper / packaging comps to show our clients prior to receiving a composite match print. (And in cases of sending digital proofs we would like it to be accurate enough to send to the printer with little grief) The Epson that we have now is on it's last legs, but our owner isn't going to just go out and spend 3G's for a computer that can't be warranted (AKA, it really needs to be able to make it's money back... fast) Here are my questions

1) Is A lower quality printer ($500) with Adobe PressReady a real option.

2) Should we just suck it up and get the $3000Epson Stylus Pro $5000

3) Which will last longer, is better suited

If you can give me some pro's and cons...

Thanks

You should buy an Epson 1270 large format printer ($499) and Adobe Press ready so you can RIP Quark files. You will have better results than anything else on the market (non-high end pro $$$). I know because I've done my research and I have a graphics company. Enjoy.

I would agree with the previous post: PressReady is probably your best bet.

I work in a small graphic company too, and we use an Epson 1520. We used to use Epson Stylus RIP, but it was so unreliable that we would often send out for expensive proofs.

We moved three months ago to PressReady, and it's been a lot more reliable. In fact, only our printer lets us down now, as compared to newer A3 models it's slow and not as detailed.

Just a caveat about the 1270, that no RIPs are available for it *yet*, so if you need to proof right now, you might want to get the older 1200 (identical price unfortunately for a 4 ink printer).

I currently use an Epson 1520 and Press Ready. The output is great. Regarding the 1270, I have ordered one (on back order) and as stated earlier in another post, Press Ready is not yet available for this printer.

Elderloc

We were just a bunch of sawgie old men eating egg salad sandwitches in a card board box, playing tease the wild wolverine in a confind space.
