Is the fan necessary in an external DVD burner?

I just got a Mercury Pro 5.25" enclosure from OWC and put my Pioneer 110D DVD burner in it. Burns great, and fast via USB 2. My only complaint is that the fan is running all the time. Its not too loud, but it bugs me.

Question: If I disconnect the fan will my drive overheat while burning? Anyone tried this with this model?
