just talked to a reseller in my area...i asked him if he had any iPod's i could check out...he said that he had one but that Apple won't let them show them off untill Nov. 10 (tomorrow)...i thought that was kinda weird....
Also, salesman was pretty open with me and told me that they just found out that Apple only gives a 90 day warranty on the iPod....
I was floored!!! 90 day warranty? what up wit that???
i think it is a MAJOR mistake on Apple's part....if i am going to spend $399 on a firewire drive/mp3 player i want at least a 1 year warranty....
this makes me think that the iPod is not as sturdy. makes you think that it won't stand up to the jogging, running, moving that they claim it will handle..
what do you think?

There's been TONS of posts on this...Basically, some agree, some disagree...My take on it is that companies like Hundai offer 10 year warranties because their cars suck camel sack. 90 days is becoming standard on some consumer electronics. If an electronic unit is going to fail it's usually in the first 30 hours of operation.

i don't buy the hyundai argument.....
not that i think that they are better built than say a ford
or a chevrolet or anything....but better built cars, more expensive cars, usually have longer warranties....lexus, porsche, infiniti, etc.....
i mean look at dodge, it's cars are crap, and they only have a 3 year warranty.....
besides, to me a longer warranty means that a manufacturer is that much more sure that their product will withstand the punishment..

There's 2 sides to the coin. A manufacturer can increase the price of a good car and sell you a 10 year warranty ; or they won't and sell you a shitty car with a 10 year warranty.
Dealers can make more money leasing you the car and then selling it to Snoop Dogy Dog 3 years later after your lease is up. Most people that can FINANCIALLY AFFORD the car/lease don't worry about extended warranties because they know that in 36 months when their lease is up, they will be able to FIANCIALLY AFFORD another luxury car. They could care less if their car lasted 4 years - they won't be driving it.
Cheap car manufacturers tease you with long warranties because they think you'll buy them beause they're giving you a long warranty. It doesn't make the car better-built. I don't see any 10 year old Hyundai's on the street. But then again, I don't live in the 'hood. Sure Hyundai's are probably better built now then 10 years ago, but that still doesn't make them as dependable as my Jeep. I wasted an extra $1500 when my 3 year Jeep warranty was up so that I could extend it to 6 years/100,000 miles. Gues what? I never used it! My Jeep has 104,000 miles on it (since April, 1996) and runs as good as new. But we're not talking about cars. If we were, I'd pull out my Honda card.
Most consumer electronics have very short warranties, relative to your Mac. I'm looking for a good firewire DV camcorder. Guess what? The warranty on almost all of them are 90 days. Yes, some of them cost 4x as much as an iPod. Take a look at other hard-drive based mp3 players - how long is their warranties? I'd be hard pressed to hear more 1 year.
Bottom line: iPod is a consumer electronics device. Other consumer electronics mfrs warranties are usually 90 days. Why should Apple warranty it for longer? I dunno.
Personally, I think the warranty *should* be for longer because Apple is clearly selling it to Mac owners only (because of the integration of it and iTunes) and us Mac owners are used to good warranties on our slightly higher-priced products. We know a good value when we see one. And a device with a short warranty sounds fishy coming from our favorite company. They should warranty it like they warranty the Apple RAM and AirPort module and Base Station. My AppleCare warranty that I'm going to buy explicitly cover the 3 mentioned 3 things simply because I'm using them with my Powerbook - why not extend it to the iPod?

Am I the only one who finds the standard 1 year warranty on Apple's computers somewhat inadequate? Isn't the industry standard 3 years? But I do agree with you, I'd love to see the iPod covered by the pricey applecare warranty I had to purchase for my powerbook the same way other peripherals like airport are covered.

bernt,
BMW's and Audi's both have
5 year 50,000 mile warranties...
check www.edmunds.com
90 day warranty on the iPod is yet again Apple's
way of giving us Mac loyalists "less for more $"...
if i pay $399 on ANY electronic device i expect
and demand at least a 1 year warranty...90 day warranties
don't bother me if i am paying less than $200...
i mean sheesh....my AMD 1.2GIG Athlon processor only cost
me $125 and it has a FULL 3 YEAR WARRANTY......
Apple needs to get a clue.....

Haha... 2 year forced warranty here in Iceland... some European Union thing...
Guess the higher price here in Iceland will be worth it?

Did everyone but me get a registration card with/do an online registration of their new iPod?
I didn't receive the former, nor was there anything indicating that the latter happened for me automatically let alone manually.
iPod Registration? Bueller??
