I have 500 - 600 CDs in my collection. I am currently in the process of importing the CDs to my hard drive.

My question is this; since my iPod (yet to arrive) will not hold all of the CDs, how does one go about importing the CDs?

TIA

import all of your CDs to your machine's hard drive using itunes 2. once your ipod arrives, selectively download the songs you want to carry with you to the ipod. i believe if you attempt to sync more than 5 GBs worth of MP3s to the ipod, it will pop up a dialog and ask you to choose which ones you want most.

Thanks so much. I am sure I could have figured it out when my iPod arrives. However, if I can't have it right now, I can at least talk about it!

You will have two options, depending on what you want:

If you want it to automatically update, you can just make 'iPod' playlists and select only these to be automatically updated. As long as they and their files will fit on the iPod it will just automatically update this selected subset of your collection. The downside is you can't adjust things that are still on your iPod.

I'm using manual. I still set up 'iPod' playlists but drag them to the iPod. In this mode you can actually adjust the playlists that reside on your iPod and play the tunes on your iPod with the desktop iTunes. Not as automatic but gives me a greater degree of control.
