Can anyone out there please enlighten me as to the whys and wherefores of these devices ? I mean are there any companies currently producing them etc ?
I bring this topic up in the availablity of faster/cheaper ram, and being that ram has no moving parts as opposed to hard drives fizzing out of operation.

Currently there's a lot of investigation into solidstate RAM which would make this concept feasible. Technically, you could stuff a bunch of RAM into a box and run a computer off of it, however, if that RAM lost it's power, it would lose all the data. That's too big of a risk really. That and RAM is a lot more expensive than a platter disk. Solidstate ram may change the way we look at it though.

Some local dudes told me that Ram Drives were around when hard drives were of small capacities but faded out when technology breakthroughs occurred that allowed for larger capacities. So if they already have been in existance they must have had to been somehow able to withstand the problem of power failures ?
Anyway in the light of the " ipod " battery lasting 10 hours it seems feasible to suggest that solidstate drives must be just around the corner ?
