I still only have 10GB in my G4 Sawtooth and need an upgrade desperately but dont have much cash to spend as i will shortly be getting an ibook.
Does anyone know if Western Digital HD's are of a suffescient quality? They are the cheapest ATA drives at maczone.co.uk
Is their a reason for their cheap price?
Thanks

you should just go and get a ibm desktar 75 GXP or 60 GXP drive. these are vastly superior to any drive out there. try www.pricewatch.com or www.pricescan.com to find the best price. if you have cables and extra screws, go ahead and get yourself a bare bones drive. it'll save you about $20 (us).

I second the vote for IBM as it is the best drive out there.
However, to answer your question, Apple has used Western Digital drives in Macs for years (along with other brands). If it's good enough for Apple to factory install, it's good enough for you to add it as well. Performance and reliablility might not be as high as the IBM, but it should do the job.

Thanks for the help guys. Id certainly expect a higher quality from IBM but if I can get what I need for a price i can afford ill have to go for the WD Drive.

IBM drives are not "vastly" superior to all other drives. They may be somewhat better in some respects, but they aren't "vastly" superior.
Check www.storagereview.com for in-depth tests and discussions. They like both IBMs and WDs (the WD model you speak of was a favorite for quite a while), as well as Maxtors, etc. It all depends on which spec is most important to you (speed, noise, price, size, etc.). You really can't go wrong with any of the major drive manufacturers, and there's nothing wrong with buying a WD if you like the price.
