I fully agree about the Bass Boost issue. This is the SINGLE reason I'm not buying one - the poor quality of the sound, with specific reference to bass performance. It's simply bad. So lame, that this is the most expensive MP3 player on the market (more or less) and its MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE (the quality of the sound) is its worst. What a disappointment.[/LIST]

You don't know what you are talking about!
The fact that you can say the iPod has low sound quality because it lacks a bass boost is amazing. The bass boost is a feature missing, not a lack of sound quality!!! Actually, using a bass boost lowers the sound quality (adds distortion etc.). You may want to raise the bass level based on your personal listening preferences, but DON'T say it has anything to do with sound quality!!!

Bass Booster option. It's a defacto standard in all the portable audio player. Most if not all CD player has this function which allows the sound be have one or two stepped Bass Booster which makes the sound have more bass, or/and reduced Treble.
If you're into portable audio equipments, you should know this and it's one of the key elements feature in the player. iPod lacks this feature..
but im sure Apple's going to add this feature with the firmware update sooner or later.. (hoping it's soon...)

I have to agree with G4ME here. I think what a lot of people are forgetting is the fact that the iPod can be updated (I think that's one of the reasons Apple finds this product to be a breakthrough). So I see iPod kinda as iTunes 1.x it doesn't have all the features we want right now, but in a few months as G4ME said you'll plug in your iPod see that there's an update and then you'll have bass boost, equalizer, etc.

you gotta be kidding me....
it sounds great!
i'm listening to a weezer cd that i ripped at 128 and it sounds exactly the same as it does on my cd player.
i mean it's a portable, it'll never sound as great as my yamaha computer speakers but it's great for a ipod type device
i never even thought about sound before i read this post.
i'm not talking out of my a$$ either, i have a nomad too (i'll show it to my kids one day and explain to them this is what we used before ipods)
BUY THE IPOD. IT SOUNDS GREAT.

Seems to me if they wanted to add in an equalizer, it'd be a matter of releasing a software update, no? So it's not entirely impossible that they'd add it..

Bass boost is there to componsate for the cheap headphones that ship with
cheap portables.
People got brainwashed into hearing exagerrated bass on everything just
because it made cheap headphones sound fuller.
But then again, I suppose if you're into techno, drum 'n' bass and other
heavily electronic music it just won't do it for you unless it's
bluegeoning your brains out.

true.. but I would have to say that the headphone that comes with iPod is much cheaper than my Sony earbuds. Which isn't saying Sony's better than Apple, because Apple probably bought the rights from a third party company that makes those headphones.
I can also say that most people who invest in home theater system listens to their CDs through amplified receiver which usually makes the audio sound "better" depending on what kind of setup you have... (making it real simple to understand...)
It'll be nice to have some sort of post sound processing feature on the iPod itself. The thing cost me 400 bucks. I would expect to at least have those sound features found on 90 bucks RadioShack CD players :o
and yes, iPod sounds excellent through my receiver out to my 5.1 speaker setup. But no, I didn't by a 5GB HD set-top mp3 player.
i'll just patiently wait for Apple to release an updater.
