My iPod is fantastic and everything is working great, except... If I plug the iPod in while iTunes 2 isn't running, it mounts as a Firewire data volume and doesn't launch iTunes 2 automatically. Yes, I have all the preferences set correctly in the iPod config section of iTunes 2. Any idea what's up?

I did a full restore with iPod Updater and then resynchronized with iTunes 2, but it still mounts as FireWire drive if iTunes 2 isn't running when it's connected.

All else is working flawlessly.

Well, just for giggles, I did a another couple of complete restores, trying to follow Apple's directions to the letter. Can't do it following Apple's restore instructions, because when I plug the iPod in, it mounts as a FireWire volume and when I launch iTunes, iPod Updater takes over and iTunes won't see the iPod (iPod Updater is still running as per the instructions from the restore procedure). I have to quit iPod updater to and then relaunch iTunes to get it to recognize the Pod and start the automatic setup assistant.

This is OS X 10.1, by the way. Anyone else seeing this? iTunes 2 won't launch when you plug in the Pod and by default, the Pod mounts as a FireWire volume (even though FireWire disk mode isn't enabled in the prefs). If I launch iTunes 2 BEFORE plugging in the Pod, everything works fine.

Just open iTunes. Click the iPod icon on the bottom. Then deselect Use As Firewire Disc.

It will then become an iPod again.

Duh... that was it.

For some reason, it didn't get added to my login app start list when I installed iTunes 2 again.

I launched Helper manually, and it immediately recognized the iPod when I plugged it in and launched iTunes 2; also did NOT mount as FireWire drive.

I've manually added iTunes Helper to my login launch list, so all is cool.

Thanks much!
