I've been a very bigg fan of Apple but I'm just making my return to the platform after many years. I work for a large hosiptal which I'm converting to mac's at the higher levels. I'm now the head of Macintosh support but I'm weak in the Printers on Network area.

I setup two 4050N laserjets today and everything went fine. I used Jet admin and had Apple talk enable on the printers etc. How ever what I would like to know is do you still have to use Apple Talk on the Mac's? I thought they went to straight TCP/IP. If so how is this handled on the OSX platform I see the option for LPR ports? I have two macs at home but until my new dual 800 comes in for R&D at work; I can't play around with it on the big network.

What I need to know is can you or can you not disable the need for Apple talk? The reason I ask is Appletalk is a chat happy protcol that broadcasts alot, even when it is not in use (From What I have seen on NETRADAR).

Does anyone know of a way to just IP tunnel to the printer, like you can with PC's

Please send reply's to me at dkellogg@borgess.com as well as post. I'm in a pinch I'm gain ground with the Mac conversion though.

My Mas tunnel directly to my HP LaserJet 1200N without a hitch. I just install the driver software on the 'Books, go to the Chooser, and voila, there's my new printer over AirPort. I run a router and the base station just connects the AirPort clients to the base station... NAT.

Is Apple Talk turned off? See what I need to do is get the printers running straight IP with out Apple talk if at all possible.
