I recently sold my old LC-575 Mac to a buddy of mine along with an external Supra 28.8 fax modem. I has always worked fine for me but he is having a problem that I just can't figure out.

The bloody thing will no longer go into V. Fast Class mode and as a result defaults to V.32 Bis and will not connect any faster that 14,400. I have tried every AT command I can think of, poked S registers, the whole bit, but no dice.

The simple solution would probably be to upgrade to a newer modem, but a 56K would be a waste of time. The old 16550 UART in the old mac is limited to 38,400. And just try and find a used external 33.6 modem in my area!

Any thoughts people?

try a phoneline filter?

try rewiring the phone outlet? there are webpages that describe exactly how to do it

maybe call the phone company and complain about a noisy line?

there are all sorts of sites that have linetesters (like 3Com) and TechTool Pro does a linetest i think or maybe it just used to

search the forums, keywords: modem, script, line tester, etc
