Needed: an inexpensive, fast laser printer. I tried an Epson 5700i, but the lights dimmed in my condo apartment every 12 seconds during printing. (The fuser no doubt) The copy was beautiful from my iMac. But I have returned it, not wanting to spend $1,000 rewiring the place. What should I try next?

Hey, I had the same problem with my old Lexmark printer! I'd lose power every time I tried to print.

My new printer is great, though. It's an Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS. I bought it on eBay for $150. It was in practically new condition, so I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much more at a dealer. It's 4 ppm and 600 dpi (as the name implies). If you do get it, I seriously suggest getting the upgrade to 6 MB. The 2 MB that comes standards can't even handle most PDF files. I bought the RAM upgrade from Glen Micro for under $50. Unfortunately, it's strictly LocalTalk, so if you have a modern computer, you'll have to get an AsantéTalk or something similar. That cost me another $100. But I'd say it was well worth it in my case because my wife prints _everything_ when she surfs the web. I was spending $40 in inkjet cartridges every other week. Now I spend $80 on a toner cartridge that lasts me a year.

I have a 4/600PS too, and I have to say that it is a good printer.

I've found the memory upgrade for just over $20 online, so check around. The installation is a pain though.

Any of the older LaserWriter II series printers (except the IISC) are great printers that will work great for most non demanding tasks. The IINT or NTX models can be found for about 150-200$ just about anywhere, and they are very reliable machines. The toner is cheap too. As with the 4/600PS, you'd have to get an localtalk bridge box if you wanted to use them with an iMac or other newer machine (except the for the LaserWriter IIG, which has an RJ-45 Ethernet port), although I'd say it's still worth it.

cheers!
