Hello,

I'm having some problems with an iBook and a USB CDRW drive (Que).

Whenever I flip the lightswitch, it causes an unstable connection and my cd drive fails to write (using Adaptec Toast 3.8).

I have tried this is multiple buildings, and had the same problem (ie flipping a lightswitch causes an unstable connection). Nothing is plugged in to an outlet controlled by the lightswitch.

My question: Is there any way I can determine if the problem is with my iBook or my Que! Drive. Both are under hardware warranty, however my telephone support from Apple has expired, so they won't discuss the problem with me. So I was hoping someone can help me determine where the problem lies. I want to fix this annoying "feature."

Thank you much,

Brian

P.S. you can reach me at NDBounce@hotmail.com

i can't speak from experience, i don't have a CD writer yet, but from what i've read the power problem is an unfortunate 'feature' of the Que! drive.

As i research what drive to buy i've saved a few clips. Here's a post from people with the same problem:

Subject: PROBLEMS ON QUE

I have a Que drive attached to an I-MAC. I have used both the OEM Toast sent with the drive and the 4.0 update with the bridge patch. I have found this USB drive to be very unstable. Often the connection to the Q will just drop off and have to be re-established by turning the Q power switch off and then on. Also I have seen the drive fail while writing when any other device sharing the power source is turned on, even monitors waking up from sleep seem to cause the USB connection to jump ship. As far as music CD's, I have been able to burn many, along with several failures.

When I initially set up my drive I had no problems - probably a 95% success rate. After moving into a new office, that immediately changed to a 25% success rate. After chasing down every variable and trying every suggested solution I finally isolated the problem; the power. After plugging the drive into a good surge suppressor (The Que! had been plugged directly into the wall) things were great!

I have always had the drive connected directly to my B&W 400 - no bus. I have, however, been able to achieve the promised speeds (4x data and 2x audio) consistantly. Considering the low price & the fact that I purchased the drive right after they hit the market I don't have any complaints.

Good luck.
