The Lexmark x83 in 10.1 works just fine - sorta. The existing drivers, said to be for 10.0.4 seem to work in 10.1 - that is until the machine has not been used for an hours and then the 'energy saver' kicks in and the machine shuts off. The next time you try to use it -after a manual restart - printing [and scanning and copying] fails giving an error message that the machine cannot be accessed. You have to reboot the mac to print, presumably the driver loads at boot time. Not Good, Copying works just fine from the x83. Very frustrating. I am using a G3 with a PCI USB card from 'amedia' that works my xlr8 scrolling mouse just fine.
When the AIO is installed the x83 is not installed as a USB printer - which makes sense since it is more than just that - but has its own installer and shows up in print center as a separate line item in the New Printer dialogue and when selected there are two x83 lines. Selecting the first leads to a crash of Print Center but the second sets up the printer. Except for this fatal flaw printing, scanning and copying just work fine. Is there any other experience with this beast??? drjoe

Lexmark fixed the problem for me in the most improbable way. Tech support [Yes Virginia, there is a Lexmark tech support] suggested that if the x83 was plugged into a surge protector I try it out plugged directly into the wall. So I did. And it did [work!]. So now I have an OS 10.1.1 deice that scans and copies and prints [as long as it is plugged into the wall - and not a surge protector. Thanks Lexmark.

I'm considering buying this printer but have had a hard time finding information about it.

I already have a good laser printer and just need to replace my scanner that died last month and be able to print out color pages for creating posters for conventions & conferences.

So my questions are:

1. How does the printer work in OS 9.1/9.2? Any problems printing from Photoshop, AppleWorks, Word 98?

2. Does scanning work from Photoshop, or is a special Lexmark tool required (as seems to be the case for the more inexpensive X73)?

3. Does copying work without a computer connected/turned on?

I've searched various reviews and whatnot but have found almost nothing regarding the use of a Mac and the X83. Lexmark's product page for the X83 doesn't even mention the Mac as a supported OS, but the box that the printer comes in does, as does their drivers web site..

Thanks!
