My trusty Laserwriter 4/600 is still going strong after years of flawless performance. However, I need a printer with more memory that can handle printing out more complex documents. It also needs to be networkable as I have a small network with two computers sharing a dsl line and a one printer. Price? the lower the better, around 400-500 would be ideal. I'd also like it to be pretty fast, around 10ppm. New or used, doesn't matter. Just want something reliable with excellent quality print, reasonably fast output and networkable, that's it.
I'm looking into the following
Apple 16/600 - used for maybe 2-300
HP Laserjet 1200 series
Brother
Any good suggestions????? Thanks!
Pete

The August issue of MacWorld has a review of six laser printers. They recommend the Brother HL-1670N, but that's $750. Another is the HP 1200se which is only $400 and seems to do all the Brother does. This is the one I'm eyeballing. Anyhow, the article might be worth reading.

Lexmark - E312 is great, add some memory. But it isn't networkable. Just what I use and love. I think it is funny that $800 would be too much? for 12ppm networkable with a RISC processor to boot! I remember lusting for LaserWriter only it was $6,800 in 1989. You can find the E312 for under $300 sometimes - buy two!!

The HP LaserJet 1200 is excellent. I have the network version, and it kicks so much ass. The printing speed is impressive, even with 8 megabytes of printer memory. It prints at 15 pages per minute, looks awesome, and automatically assigned itself an IP on my network. The printer is connected to my physical Ethernet. With my AirPort base station acting like a bridge between wireless and Ethernet, the printer works without having to specify anything. I recommend it above all else, even for use with only one computer. It has a USB port, which is a much-appreciated update from older serial/parallel connections.
Damn. Get the LaserJet 1200. You will not regret it.

I have the HP 2200 network version. the printer is very fast (18ppm),
excellent prints (1200dpi), and outstanding quality. I couldn't be more
happy with it. The price is in the mid-700's, but well worth it.

Check out the new Samsung ML-1210. It's a laser printer and it's only $200. I've read lots of great stuff about it on c|net.

As a networked printer with AppleTalk capability, you should seriously consider the Brother 1270N.
It has a very small footprint, is is available in an PostScript version, can be upgraded to 36 MB of RAM using standard RAM modules (in this respect unlike HP's printers, as far as I know) and here in Europe, it has been half the price of an HP 2200 including the RAM upgrade to 36 MB _and_ a 3 year support option that covers parts and labour!.
The Brother 1270N also has a very low power standby mode (5 Watts or so), 600 dpi and a performance of 12 pages per minute in copy mode.
It's toner and drum are being changed independently and inexpensive. The overall build is good.
It works nicely with the Apple LaserWriter driver 8.6.
The Brother 1270N will be my first choice again when I have to recommend a networked printer for small work groups to a customer as well as for my own future usage.
Walter.
