I recently purchased a Microtek ScanMaker 3600 Scanner and have encounter numerous difficulties making the provided software to see the scanner.

I have a PowerMac G3 B&W 300, with 256 Meg of Ram.

The ScanWizard 5.0.0 will not load and even with ScanWizard Assistant, only loads ScanWizard 5.0 for about 1/4 second and drops out repeatedly trying to reload it, until I drop out to the desktop. I was able to load it with Photoshop. The provided software, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, only sees the ScanWizard scanning software if choosing another type of input device, not the scanner input section, and then when the scan is complete does not import it into the software. The Caere OCR softare asks me check if the Scsi connection is correct, which is pretty funny since it's a USB scanner.

So if I didn't have access to Photoshop, I wouldn't be able to use the scanner at all. The scanner is great, so the work arounds are acceptable, but any suggestions? I've correctly e-mailed Microtek 3 times since the beginning of April and their 24 hr answer service has failed to answer. My only other recourse is to pay the minute to their tech department.

I have had similar problems, this time with a older E3 scanner (hooked to a 7100/66) that worked great under everything up to 8.6.1, but pukes under 9.0/.04. I have tried to contact Microtek support via email repeatedly, but have yet to get a response after weeks of delay and numerous attempts. Sorry to say IMHO, this is a 'head crash-black eye' for Microtek. If anyone at Microtek sees this, "Nuts to you".

The scanner worked great when it to worked, and I have used the Adobe Photoshop LE to get scans under 9.x, but this is really kludgy and the SW is not as elegant as I have come to expect. Of course, this really kicks any OCR work which I could use at present and miss greatly.

I am installing the latest 3.24.4 and hope this works. There is cause for doubt as the error I get at present is:

"The application "Scanner Detector ppc 1.02" could not be opened because "USBManagerLib" could not be found"

Problem is, this isn't a USB scanner, and I can find no reference to this extension anywhere. the latest SW doesn't address the scanner detector version, which is an entirely different install. The Microtek site, when I was digging around, offers a new CD install disk for the price of registering, but this is a pipe dream as well, by all appearances.

Thanks for the talkback gpdunn.

It seems that Microtek is not what they say they are. Here at Adobe, their tech support on the phone was cool, but informative, they said, we do not give free support over the phone, either pay per the minute for support or use the web site. This web site is so far above Microtek's that it's not funny.

I mean, first there is this great forum. The reponses have been fast and informative. The troubleshooting page was great and got me to use the "other" input. It was a foot in the door, so it's a start. Then there is the automated e-mail site, which is a wealth of general info about Macs and Adobe.

The Microtek's site claims it supports the Mac with many scanners, but going to the Mac Support page for the particular scanner is a joke. All the fixes eluded to Windows machines, except for one page on how to make the scanner work, not how to make it work with any of the supplied third party software. There is not even a mention of the OCR software supplied for the Mac, except a link to their web site.

In the Windows, or Mac section, the support is heavily slanted towards PCs. There's more of them out there, but if your going to talk about third party software, that's for both platforms, at least mention the other platform.

Their macsupport e-mail is the worst offender of all. No support in the last 28 days, and I have gone through 2 of their scanners. The hardware is too good to pass up and I have work-a-rounds for everything but OCR (like you), but for their tech to telll me there's a 24 hr. reply and it's been a month, well I'm not happy.

I can work through Photoshop, til I get PhotoDeluxe to comply, and load the scanned image into it and have the fun I planned. I'm going to try the new USB update, but since Microtek says that the 3600 is compatible with version 5.0, it might be a wild goose chase.
