Printer: Epson Stylus Color 800
Ok, paper gets jammed. User yanks paper out. Black ink gets jettisoned. User replaces cartridge. All black text/graphics is 75% faded, I tried cleaning the head many times, no go. After continous tries to get it working, finally, the printer started failing to assimilate the data the computer sent it and print it (it IS connected properly, the data does get sent and the printer utilites work). Color, on the other hand, 10% faded, when doing a hardware enabled print. Um, help?!?!?!

I have a Epson 800 as well that continues to make great prints, but I don't use it that often. The problem I had was with the serial port. Best I can figure out was that a lightning bolt took out the printer's serial port but left the Mac unharmed. I paced a PowerPrint between the two and the printer took off. (It basicly saw the printer as a 24pin dot matrix) I now use the printer to it's full potential with an Epson USB to Parallel adaptor.

Try connecting the printer to a PC via the parallel port (if you have one handy) that should help you determine if the print head is OK or if the communications are still working. Swap serial ports on the Mac to isolate a problem with the Mac's ports.

Good Luck

Yep, I got the communications working now, now it just doesn't print black, 90% faded.
