I apologize in advance for this overly long posting!

I have over 7 gigs of music on my computer and I love the new iTunes 3!! However, I notice a problem of the older versions has not YET been corrected and it is very frustrating for me. I have an original iPod which holds only 4.6 gigs of music, as you know. I manage my music library by using well over 25 different playlists. Often, when I acquire new music, I am forced to make a careful decions about what songs to delete from the iPod inorder to make space for newer songs (of course, all songs are kept on my 30 gig drive and I still have them in the master library on my ibook).

The problem is with the check-boxes in the library, which are designed to tell the iPod whether to upload a particular song or not. I find that when I de-select a specific song in the library, it usually continues to be uploaded to the iPod because the song is listed as still checked in one (or usually many) playlists. Yet there is no way to search in iTunes to be certain which, if any, playlists the song may be listed in.

All of which means that when I want to eliminate a song from being maintained in the iPod, not only do I have to de-check the song's box in the library, but I must ALSO check every possible playlist that the song may be listed in. This is a tremendous pain, as I mangage my large library by using MANY different playlists.

iTunes 3 appears to worsen this problem with the new Smart Playlists.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

I agree with you. That was a problem for me too, and partly the reason I now have a 20 GB iPod on order.

However, back to the problem...I do think it's flawed logic in iTunes, but Apple seems to disagree. It seems a perfect candidate for an Applescript. There's a pretty comprehensive website for Applescripting iTunes here. I don't think there is a solution there, but they do seem prolific, and they do have a message board.

And since iTunes is now OS X only, you might mention this frustration to them at their OS X feedback page.
