Coolmax CD-311 hard drive external enclosure with USB, 1394, and S-ATA support.

I bought this thing at a shop because the enclosure on my existing external drive was giving me problems. They transferred the drive into the new enclosure for me and I brought it home. I powered it up, made sure the switch was set to USB/1394, plugged it into my FireWire cable and turned it on.

It spun up, but didn't appear on the desktop. Sigh. I checked the System Profiler and, sure enough, the enclosure showed up ("Prolific PL3507 Combo Device"), but no drive. Disk Utility didn't see it either.

After some puzzling, I decided to try unplugging the FireWire cable and plug it into the USB cable that normally feeds my printer. Now the drive shows up on the desktop -- although since it's USB 1.1, that's not really a solution. I disconnect it (and get a warning about ejecting the drive first, oops) and reconnect it to FireWire. Same issue.

The CoolMax website doesn't seem to list FireWire drivers for Mac. A little Googling tells me that other Mac users have, in fact, gotten this enclosure to work using FireWire. Any ideas what's wrong?
