I'm close to buying a digital camcorder, but I can't make up my mind which kind to get. I have done a lot of reading, and I've decided I want to get a mini-dv camera. I would like to spend under $1000. This has narrowed it down to 3 brands, canon, sony, and panosonic, all of which seem to have a good history of being compatible with "iMovie." I like the cheaper prices of Panasonic, but it seems like I'm continually lead to cameras like the Canon ZR series, and the sony TRV series. The problem I'm running into is that the new models, ie. canon ZR30 and Sony TRV11 don't seem to have a lot of reviews on them.

I would be using the cameras for general video capturing. My kids play a lot of indoor sports, so I'd like the best action/movement/low light camcorder that $1000 can buy. I also like the idea of being able to take stills (even though I know they won't be that good) and being able to have a separate USB port to download these photos.

Any advice for me? I'd sure appreciate it,

Walker

Any of those brands should serve you well. They all have comparable features and performance, so I would strongly suggest going to a store and holding them in your hand to see which is most comfortable, and whether your fingers can use the controls easily. Some people prefer an upright form factor, others a traditional camcorder style, etc.

As far as stills are concerned, rather than use the still feature on my Elura2 MC, I find it much easier to just take videos and then use iMovie to pull stills from the video. Also, you might want to consider a model with progressive-scan. It's my understanding that this can give you better stills from fast-action videos.

Get extra batteries - you will need them. Consider whether you want to charge batteries on the camera or on a separate charger. Mine uses a separate charger, which I like because I can use the camera while my spare battery is charging.

As long as the indoor sports venue is well-lit, you should get good images. The less light you have, the grainier the images. If they will let you, try taking some test video inside the store - that might give you an idea of the low-light performance. If you end up buying on the web, buy some accessories from the store out of appreciation for their time.
