I have a G4/400 that came with a 10Gig HD. This drive has been very annoying for me as it is very loud. Nothing wrong with it, just LOUD! I've read that this was a common issue with these models.

I am getting into digital video now and am shopping around for an internal HD to replace my current HD. Preferably, 40-60GB, under $200. Anyone have any suggestions? I've seen some good buys but I don't want to buy another drive that is known for being very loud or very slow. Know of any good resources on the web? Give me your wisdom! Thanks in advance.

IBM Deskstar series. 7200rpm and up to 75GB. I just got my 75GB for $279. They also have 60, 40, and 20GB versions that will be in your price range. This is the fastest UltraATA drive on the market right now. Well worth the money.

Good resources are www.storagereview.com, www.tomshardware.com, www.pcworld.com, www.pcmagazine.com. All have recently reviewed and compared large hard drives. You really can't go wrong with any of the newer models from IBM, Maxtor, Quantum, and Western Digital that use the new 20 GB platters.

Go here?

Staples has got a $25 off coupon via deal-mac until May 17 or 19, so I got a 30 gig 7200 for $95? Satisfactory!

Hi,

Well, today, I upgraded my PowerBook G4 400 internal hard drive from a 10 gig to a Travelstar 32 gb.

What a pain. I printed up instructions from a web site and the instructions for removing the bottom. Well, I didn't read the instructions for swapping out the hard drive until I had the bottom off. The insturctions were for a Pismo. Anyhow, it was a pain, but I got it swapped out.

It works great, and it is very fast, except it does make an occasional clicking sound. No where near as bad as my previous Pismo.

The most important thing is, everything still works. If anyone decides to take this on, get the instructions and read it carefully before you start.

I was able to get a Maxtor 7200rpm 30 gb internal hard drive for 95 bucks shipped from staples a while back(it was 119.95-30 coupon plus tax). It installed very easily into my sawtooth G4 and is nice and fast. I partitioned it into 25 gb for X and 5 for 9.1. Now I use my original 10gb WD drive just for MP3s

Hi:
I think you'd better get a 60G HDD with 3x20G disks from IBM because it would be quieter with only 3 disks in the HDD. My situation is just the same as you did and I got another IBM HDD 30G as soon as I got my PM G4-400. It's another good choice for 75G HDD, but you may not find it too quiet because it may contain around 5 disks, therefore it may not solve your problem.
See if you are lucky enough to find a Maxtor 80G@7200rpm, this would be the best option
