=[

My HD won't show up when plugged in. I can hear the fans whirring so it's on. It's a 120GB Lacie drive. What's going on?! Here's what happens when I open disk utility and try to fix it.

I have had good luck resurrecting drives using DiskWarrior. If you have valuable data on the drive it may be worth the $100 cost. Of course, if the problem is hardware failure, you may be out of luck.

I managed to rescue all but two pieces of data using DiskWarrior. Thanks for that tip.

I guess the only thing to do now is throw the drive away? Is there anything I can do with it?

Well, it depends why it failed. My gut feeling would be to throw it away. While you might get some more life out of it, it has proved itself unreliable.

It is external, right? Its no good for storing anything, since you can't count on it working. Maybe if you want to keep an OS on there to use when trouble shooting your main HD, but even that might be risky.

Glad you got most of your data back. Before throwing away the drive, I would reformat it with disk utility using the erase with zeros option. Then run first aide again. It if passes, it may have just been a software problem, or defective blocks that disk utility was able to remap. If it continues to fail, then you will want to trash the drive. But the LaCie enclosure can be salvaged by removing the defective drive and replacing it with a bare drive from Newegg or your favorite retailer. Depending on the internal board, you may need to stick to the 120gb limit.

I had the same problem recently. I had to remove the HD and zeros the drive as an external with my other mac. Reformatt the HD and it is running fine now. Anecdotally I found out it is almost impossible to zeros the native HD within the native mac. It's like telling it to self lobotomize. I tried it a few time and it always hang at the "Partitioning". Back up most of my data so no pain there.
It's "Brewed" not "Juiced"
