I have a sony R700 PC mindisc recorder and I was wondering if it would be able to use it as a data storage device as it came with a USB cord...
I heard somewhere that you can buy special 150MB minidiscs for this...
If it's true it would be really handy and would save me buying a ZIP or CD RW drive...

I believe that MiniDisc music and data formats, and the drives, are incompatible - thanks to the insistence of the music industry (and we all have CD burners anyway).

I've seen the MiniDisc data discs for sale in high-end/pro music recording outlets, not sure what they get used for, digital multitrack maybe?
