Question: are the standard resolutions (IE 800x600 1024x768) the same ratio (4:3, i believe, correct me if not) as a standard television? Just wondering....

no it's not, a north american TV uses 7something i forgot the exact res, but it is lower than 800x600, and i know it isn't 4:3 either. the europian TV' use an even lower res.

Well europe use PAL over here that's actually higher res then the old NTSC...

PAL is 625 lines of which 576 is used.
NTSC have 525 horizontal lines of which they use 487!
