I am replacing the 60GB hard drive that came in my MacBook with a 200GB hard drive from MacMall. I have an external hard drive to back my data up on but I am not sure what all NEEDS to be backed up.

I am going to re-install OS X once I get the hardware installed but I am not sure what the best way to backup my iTunes, iPhoto, Address Book, etc. is. Does anyone have any suggestions/experiences to relate on this matter? Specifically, are there folders that I can copy onto my external drive and then replace the folders once I have OS X reinstalled? Thanks for the help!

I would get an external enclosure for your old drive (preferably one without power brick) and use it for backups or whatnot. Then you can simply use Apple's Migration Assistant to move all the data you need automatically.

You need an enclosure for 2,5" drives with S-ATA (<- important!) connection. USB 2.0 is probably fine; Firewire/USB 2.0 combo is ideal.

You might want to consider the migration manually - some people say that a clean install and then copying the data over is better, but less convenient. Your millage may vary!

I haven't had problems with Apple's Migration Assistant, even though my account stems from an install on 10.0.3!

So unless you have problems, I wouldn't do it manually. Even if there are problems, since the data resides safely on your second disc, there's no risk associated to using Migration Assistant for the data transfer.

Great info guys. Really appreciate it. I don't want to miss anything important so I will probably do the Migration Assistant method. Hopefully the enclosure I have ordered will work with the old hard drive. If anyone is interested here is the link to the one I ordered:

Agreed, reports of problems are rare, and there's no risk of data loss, the issues people have are to do with slow-downs. I agree though, migration assistant is reliable, and convenient - it's only people who are anal about 'fresh' installs who should look at this.

Nope, that will not work. You need an enclosure for S-ATA drives. You ordered an enclosure for an IDE drive.

Dangit! I thought that one was an SATA enclosure, but you are right I just re-read the item description and it is IDE. Hopefully they can stop the order.

Anyone know of a good SATA enclosure for something like this?

www.newegg.com

I got the Vantec NexStar.3

I couldn't find any 2.5" SATA enclosures w/firewire and this one got the best reviews. I ordered it with the Hitachi 160 Gb drive ($135) because I did the same thing you're doing.

Hope that helps.

This $50 enclosure will work for you: Newegg.com - APRICORN EZ-UP-S External Enclosure - Retail

Despite what one of the previous posters said, the Vantec NexStar will not work for you (it's ATA on the inside rather than SATA).

Believe it or not Vantec makes more than one external enclosure. Shocking huh?

Newegg.com - VANTEC NST-260SU-BK External Enclosure - Retail

$30 bucks. Worked for my MacBook drive.
4 "Wintels", a MacBook, an iMac (G3 baby!), and a couple of iPods.

Will the Apple Migration program work with USB connection? I have read elsewhere that it only works via Firewire? If that is the case, then I need an enclosure with Firewire ports rather than USB. Anyone have any experience with this?

I looked for USB, not USB+eSATA; props to you. Yours is even cheaper.
