I just read on MacNN that if you download your music to a computer other than the one where the music was uploaded from, the operations ERASES the HD of the iPod!!

Is this true??

I remember this on an old Sony Sound Stick, and I sold it off because of it. I have many computers and I like to keep my *legal* music synched between them. I don't want to have to worry about losing the entire contents of my iPod....

Yes this is true, but I believe you can get around this using third party software like the one advertise as a banner add as I write this. iPod2iTunes

If you try to connect it to a second computer, it will ask you if you want to replace the MP3s on it with the ones on the new computer. It won't erase anything without your permission.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

When you plug it into another mac it simply asks you if you want to replace the songs on this one with the ones that are currently on the iPod. You say no and the iPod pops up in iTunes and allows you to play all of the songs on the iPod just like a CD, except you can't copy it.

Set it to manual rather than auto update, you can add whatever you want with any computer (that is set to manual) the only stupid drawback is you cant copy from ipod to itunes without other software (www.versiontracker.com dl xPod) but its silly since if you wanted to use the ipod to copy music all you'd have to do it store it as a folder.. so it really is nothing more than an inconvience, but I believe they did it to keep the R.I.A.A. happy
