I'm seriously thinking of getting an iPod (although I should actually be getting a Palm, but that's another story).

I was wondering if anybody knew when the new iPod would be available in stores.

Also, on the Apple forums, there seems to be heated discussion on a bug in the iPod: it freeezes after 37 minutes of continuous play. Is anybody here affected by this bug? Did you try to resolve this matter with Apple? How did it went?

We've played it for hours on long car rides with no problem. (I've never actually read the Harry Potter books, but I've listened to three of them!)

What has happened is that if there's a large song in your playlist, the entire song may not fit in the iPod's flash memory. In this case it will read the entire song off the hard disk, severely draining the battery in the process. Before we learned about this, the iPod would seem to "freeze", when in fact the battery had just ran down.

Hope this helps!

(Now you've got me interested in this 37 minute thing. What causes it, and why am I lucky enough not to have it?)

I just ran my iPod for 37 minutes to see what would happen (since I could not remember for sure that I have ever run it for 37 consecutive minutes before). No problems here.

However, I have had the iPod lock up on me quite a few times in the past, forcing me to reset it. It's really annoying... Sometimes it happens a couple times in a row. (It will lock up; I will reset it; it will lock up again after only a short period of time.) I have not been able to figure out what causes it, but there's nothing worse than having your song abruptly cut off, and then having to reset, reboot, and try to get back to where you were.

Sorry, I forgot to note that this 37 minute bug on affects the "old" 10 GB iPod model. MooseCat, do you have a 10 gb model?

Strange. Maybe I will go to the Apple forums, where you said everyone is discussing it, and check out what's going on.

Wow ... I just checked out that Apple forum thread (<a href="http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?50@152.dRpNaE17c0t.1@.2cd78cdd" target="_blank">here</a>). My symptoms match very well with what everyone else reports. (It doesn't happen on the 37th minute for everyone, but it happens exclusively when walking or running. Same with me.)

There's talk of a firmware fix on that thread, but it's kind of hard to imagine a firmware fix for what seems to be a hardware problem with the 10GB drive.

What a bummer.
