This must surely be a typo!

Looking at the new iBooks on the Apple Store UK page.. I was interested to see what an extra 128MB of ram might cost me (for 256MB in total). £178.72! Thats $256.60! And thats before sales tax! Kinn Ell!!!

That can't be right!? can it???

Anyway, it put me of ordering an iBook from the Apple Store. I ordered it elsewhere where the extra 128MB only cost me £65 instead.. ($90))

I'm sure it's right. No one EVER buys RAM from the Apple Store. Their pricing is absolutely insane. The same goes for extra HD's. (though not as bad as the RAM)

Don't bother getting your RAM from the Apple Store. Even with their new 50% off rebate, it's still a terrible rip-off. For UK users, it might be worth trying Crucial RAM at http://www.crucial.com/uk/

I bought RAM for a 333MHz iMac from crucial.com/uk and it arrived speedily - I am about to order a new iBook, and have noticed that as iPaulUK says, Apple's prices are insane. I'm in a bit of a quandary tho' as Mygate are offering a free 64 megs with the entry-level iBook, but with RAM so cheap now, I'd probably end up throwing away the 64 megs and putting 128 megs in instead...
On another note, does anyone know if Crucial RAM passes the Apple Firmware update test?

I have actually bought ram from Crucial here in the UK before. And yes it works fine with the latest Firmware updates.

I realise I could have bought the ram seperately myself. But when your buying a new computer, naturally it's much more convenient to buy the extra ram, and have it fitted by the people you are buying the computer from.

I could understand Apple maybe charging a few percent extra over other suppliers.. But to charge nearly 3 times as much is simply insane! I don't understand the logic of that at all..

Also as I said earlier, I was very quickly put off purchasing the computer from the Apple Store. So instead I am getting it from Jigsaw systems. www.jigsaw24.com They have always served me well (This will be my 4th mac from them). Plus they also seem to have the nack of being one of the first dealers to get the latest kit in stock..

Rob Morgan at barefeats.com probably has the best advice, if you order a system from the Apple store, max out the prcessor and video card but minimize the RAM and hard drives to save money. A little trick I found

You might want to check out OWC (eshop.macsales.com), they just made some cuts on their RAM prices and they carry a lifetime warranty. I've bought just about all my upgrades from them and I've had no problems at all.
