Has anyone ever experienced a case of a Logitech optical wheel mouse going haywire? It's recent misbehaviors are legion: lagging when dragging the scroll thumb in windows; failing to register clicks, registering clicks that I didn't make; intermittent scroll wheel support; etc. I've tried reinstalling the software from the CD and from Logitech's website; the problems remain. I know the mouse isn't supposed to fail mechanically, but I dusted off the ol' hockey puck and it works fine, so the culprit doesn't seem to be the OS or the firmware. Any advice? Will Logitech honor the warranty if I don't still have my original receipt?

Thanks ...

Too obvious, I suppose, but my Logitech wireless (but with a ball) takes two triple-A batteries. Open the control panel. Mine has a battery icon. If the top is shaded whatever color, probably red, the batteries are shot. If the bottom half of the icon shows green, move on to Part 2.

Part 2: I just downloaded Netscape 6.1 because iCab won't work at Penguin Books, and Netscape played hell with the mouse. The wheel stopped working — sometimes. After putting new batteries in the mouse, which didn't fix it, I quit Netscape and used iCab to check out Logitech and discovered an updated driver, 4.1 or 4.01 or something. I had 3.5. Their 4.0 driver had problems, so they fixed it and released 4.whatever and now it even works with Netscape. If none of that fixes it, move on to Part 3.

Part 3: If you're running Mouseware 3.5, make sure that stupid WebWheel is in the System Folder. If it isn't, nothing works. It appears to be gone with 4.whatever, thank the gods. If this doesn't fix it, move on to Part 4.

Part 4: Blow up the Logitech mouse real good.
