Can I PC format my external firewire drive so I can transfer files to my friends PC. Will I then be able to reformat it back to HFS+ on my machine?

I would assume I can but I dont want to 'destrution test' my theory!

sure, you can do that...Fat32 or NTFS for PC, either should mount on the Mac, but if you change the file system to HFS+, you'll have to reformat the harddrive (lose all data).
G4/450, T-bird 1.05GHz, iBook 500, iBook 233...4 different machines, 4 different OSes...(9, 2k, X.1, YDL2.2 respectively) PiA to maintain...
