I have Final Cut Pro, and want to bring VHS data into it. How do I go about doing this? Do I need an analogue to digital adaptor, or are there VHS players out there with Firewire/digital out?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've never heard of anything regarning a firewire out on a VHS recorder. If you have a digital video camera you can look it though there. If not you'll need a converter. There are several of them out there, but they run around $400 or so. Some are better than others so read some reviews... I'll try to track down the ones I read this morning.

-Todd...

Edit: Couldn't find the exact review, but here's one <a href="http://desktopvideo.about.com/library/weekly/aa040102a.htm?iam=metacrawl_1&terms=%2Bformac+ %2Bdv" target="_blank">http://desktopvideo.about.com/library/weekly/aa040102a.htm?iam=metacrawl_1&ter ms=%2Bformac+%2Bdv</a> . From the review I read about the Formac Studio DV ($399) they found some RF interference problems. The one that I would probably get (I don't know too much into this area) would be the Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge ($299). Read the about.com article and do some searches on the producs listed there. Hope it helps.

Edit: Found the review I read this morning. Here's the link to the one on the Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge, they also did a review on the Formac Studio DV <a href="http://www.dvformat.com/2001/04_apr/reviews/dazzle_dvbridge1.htm" target="_blank">http://www.dvformat.com/2001/04_apr/reviews/dazzle_dvbridge1.htm</a>

No problem - glad it helped. Let me know what you decide on and why. I might be getting into something similar soon, but am reluctant to spend money without real world reviews from real people.

You might also want to consider the <a href="http://www.canopus.com/ppm_advc100.htm" target="_blank">Canopus ADVC100</a>. It's been recommended by many as technically superior to the Dazzle Hollywood DV-bridge, with better features, including locked audio support.

Don't know if this is timely enough for your purchase, but if you are going to spend a lot on a 'converter' its probably worth investing in a digital video camera with a/v in-out for your conversions. You pay a little bit more and get a new camera to boot with better quality than the vhs cams you could buy and not have to worry about the conversions.

I'd suggest getting a cam instead of a converter, unless all you are going to do is conversions.

there are a bunch of devices that do this. you'd have better luck looking for topics on this if you go to the multimedia, DV and audio forum. in fact, here's a topic i posted regarding people's experience with the various analog to digital convertors on the market.

and i don't know about getting a digital video camera instead of a convertor, unless you need a new camera. even the cheapest new camera with pass-through is a bit more expensive than analog-digital convertors available.
