Running OS 10.4.8 on my 400mhz Pismo. Went to Disk Utility to do a simple
verification of the Pismo's internal startup disk and get the following after
initiating verification:

Minor problem detected

Volume Header Needs Repair
Volume Pismo needs to be repaired
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Is this message indicative of something serious. I can't run the Repair on the
the startup volume of course. I guess I would have to do a archive and install
from my Tiger 10.4.3 Install disc so I can access "repair" on Pismo. Will
this fix the Pismo error, or is there another way to repair without having to
do a OS install from the DVD? I currently don't own any other disk utility programs like Tech Tool. Any thoughts appreciated.

You do a repair of the startup volume or disk by starting up from your system CD/DVD and selecting Disk Utility in one of the menus. You don't do an archive and install... well you may have to if you can't fix the problem, but you're not there yet.

There is another way to repiar the startup disk... I think it involves booting into safe mode or something.

I'm somewhat confused about how to start up from system disc.
All I have is a Tiger Install DVD. I'm familiar how in the past with
OS 9 you could boot from system disc, but when I install Tiger disc
it automatically prompts me to do a Install.

It's the same as OS9 days really. Pop the Tiger DVD into the drive, restart while holding down the C key. When the system comes up, go through the menus at the top of the screen until you find Disk Utility. It's there, trust me, it just defaults to the installer screen. Run Disk Utility to repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility. Then quit the installer, and it will ask you if you want to restart and click yes. If I've missed some details, that's kindof the outline of the whole procedure. The only thing your intuition was missing was that the Disk Utility application is hidden in a menu upon restarting booted from the Tiger DVD.
