Running 8.6, have the latest modem updaters from Apple. Still am only able to connect at 21600-28800. Whats up? Not my ISP cuz friend and relative have same ISP and connected in the 40000's. Have 266 version with 56k modem. Help me!

Since your friends and relatives can connect at 40k, the problem isn't with your ISP. Since I have a Wallstreet Powerbook running 8.6, and I can connect at 40k, it's probably not the modem. I used to work for an ISP, and most of the time speed problems were caused by either the wiring in your house, or the distance of your house to the telco. I would suggest taking your Powerbook to your friend's (the ones who can connect faster) house, and see if you can connect faster from there. Or, disconnect all the other phones/answering machines/etc. in your house, then try using your modem. Sometimes this can make a difference too.

I agree. Your problem is likely with the phone lines. I connect with my bronze both at home (on two lines, one dedicated and the other my regular phone line) and at work. At work I connect regularly right around 50k and I never get disconnected. At home on the dedicated line I connect at about 45k and will occasionally get disconnected. When I connect through the voice line, I rarely get above 33k and get disconnected a lot. Also, at my in-laws, I (and they on their iMac) can't connect faster than 28k. Same access number each time to the same ISP. Obviously, not a modem problem.
It's too bad that more people are not educated about the 54k modem scam. They can't (by law) connect above 53k and rarely will see real-world performance above 50k. There outta be a law!

One more thing!
I have tried to disconnect all my in-laws various phones and answering machines and such in an attempt to get their connection speed up without success. This sometimes works, but not always. Don't assume if it doesn't work that the problem is not with your lines (because it probably is). Remember that you can also be hosed by the lines coming out of your house and running all the way to the telco substation.

It's the phone lines 99% of the time. Sometimes you have to call the phone company, and ask them to run a line quality test. But disconnect your computer from the phoneline for the duration of the test. After that test, you should be able to connect fine.
If you are still having trouble, e-mail me, and I can send you a firmware updater for the 56k modem of the Wall Streets.
Sincerely,
