After checking HP's site which clearly indicated that their 3500c ScanJet scanner is supported under OS X 10.1, I purchased one and installed the driver on an iMac 500Mz. It is an USB scanner After repeated attempts to get the software to work, it kept indicating the scanner is not initialized as it can not be found. The Apple System Profiler detects the printer in the USB port. Gave up and called HP Support,. After they did some research on this, the reponse is that the driver does not work on random Macs under System 10.1.x. They are not sure why and engineering is looking into it. No date on when it will be fixed. Hope it doesn't turn out to be months.

In the meantime, it works fine under 9.x (native mode).
Have not tried to test this when OS 9.x is running under 10.1.

Does anyone know if OS X 10.2 supports scanners directly?

After sending a bug report e-mail to HP support, I got a generic reply stating the problem will be looked at by HP, there is no expected date to resolution and for more updates check HP support site or sign up to get HP support e-mail. The response has the usual legalize - HP does not guarantee the working of the product and is not responsible for damage, problems, etc.

What is suprising is the product is sold as OS X 10.1 compatible.

I still have a week to decide to return the product. Will see if HP can react quick, which I doubt!

not that this helps you but I find that the problem seems so go away if I "turn on the scanner before I do anything else. If you go to the " hp scanjet software" folder you will see an app called "hp scanner preferences" ( why these arent in the regular prefs of the scanning app is beyond me) any way the lamp I changed under the lamp tab to faster scan and made the time 1 minute after the present time. I notice that the transparencey lamp came on imediately then I could scan and open other apps with the same speed as my computer always has. I haven't contacted HP about this since Im's sure they will give me a save energy speech. They told me before it probably was because my mac doesn't have a built in usb port but has a PCI card. I got a message back from a guy on the apple forums that his 3570c works fine with his newer mac which I assume has built in USB. They really just need to make a physical on/off switch

Are you using a USB hub? Or are you plugged directly in to your Mac. I'm using a hub and I have found certain HP devices seemingly in conflict with each other and I have to do some playing around to get things to work. My scanner seem to be the most affected. Another possible problem you might have is with having it loaded in OS 9 as well as 10. Have you tried deleting the software from 9?

no not I'm not using a hub. Just a Macally 2 port USB PCI card. I use it for my Microsoft intellimouse and the scanner.

My computers specs are biege desktop G3 300 mhz 640 ram 30 gig seagate hd on two partions X and 9 are both on the same 7.5gig partition, USB card metioned above,Yamaha8824 scsi burner which has been working fine but I unattached just to see if that caused the problem. I never installed it in Os 9 just X I never really use 9 anymore. Where would it have installed it there? I looked in the os9 apps folder and saw nothing.

Do you know if Vuescan works with this scanner? I only have 56k and 1 phone line so I don't want to tie it up downloading something which won't work

Vuescan probably will not work with this scanner. Its to new. All I can recommend at this point is to load the actual production copy of 10.2 and see if that makes a difference. The only other thing you could try is to use a second USB card and plug your scanner into a dedicated port. Outside of that I don't have any more suggestions at the moment.
