I have a 5 gig 'Pod that's nearly maxed out on disk space. Seems to me that's the best reason to upgrade, which I'll be doing next month.

Anyone else upgrading? And if not for capacity, what other reasons are prompting your decision?

I still rarely fill mine as I change songs often and usually leave a gb or so to store documents and such.

If you are looking for additional rational to upgrade to a new machine, the smaller form factor and the solid state controls are a great feature. The scroll wheel will no longer be a component which can break on you.

I had my 5GB 'Pod stolen in a burglary a few weeks ago (they got my G4 Lombard too ) and I'm going to take the cash value from the insurance, rather than a replacement, so I can then upgrade to the 20GB 'Pod.

Main reason is increased disk size: I often use the iPod to shuffle files to/from work & friends' Macs. I work with DV, so 20GB becomes a genuinely useful size, as I can carry smaller DV projects (typically 5-15GB) in their entirety. And still have room for plenty of music, of course <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I'm fine with my 5-gigger. I can't imagine needing THAT much more music in my pocket at any given time.

Has anyone had trouble with the scroll wheel? I'm intrigued by the solid state trackpad wheel, but probably not enough to upgrade (yet).

I'll upgrade when they add functions not upgradeable by software/firmware.

I have a 5GB at the moment, and I have ordered a 20GB.

I'm really looking forward to the extra space, which means I can carry all my music with me. I have already ripped all the CD's in my collection (that I listen to a lot) ready for when my iPod arrives. I have 19GB all ready and waiting to load.

I have not had a problem with the rotary wheel, it's still as good as the day I got it, but then I really do look after my stuff. Whenever I sell something on eBay, etc, people always comment on how well things have been looked after.

I'm really looking forward to the new case and remote as well, the remote will be the biggest advantage for me. Means I don't have to keep getting the iPod out to change track, turn up / down the volume.

My order was placed on the 18th (confimed on the Apple Store site), and it's currently being built. No idea when it will arrive, but I'm assuming the 2-4 weeks means 4 weeks, then I can be surprised if it comes early.

I'm off on Vacation for 2 weeks in October and being able to take 314 Albums (4100 tracks) with me will be great.

I bought one of the original 5 gig iPods weeks after it was introduced. Besides a few charging problems, I've been very happy with my pod, which I use for music and file transfer from work to home.

I have only about half my CD collection on my iBook and already I have to choose which songs to deselect everytime I put a new one on. So I have decided to move up to the 20, so that I can put my entire collection on, not to mention the songs I get from CD rentals (legal in Japan, where I live), and still have room for files.

My one concern is that the size changes may make my rubberized case unusable. How different is the 20 from the original 5?

Also, does anyone know when the next iPod is rumoured to be out?

- Thanks, Pat

the only thing that keeps me upgrade is the ipod's battery. I don't think the ipod's battery can last as long as two years. My original ipod's battery went south after just nine months of very little use. And apple have not indicated how much they will charge for battery replacement if yours eventually runs out and your warranty is up. Are they really think people will fork out another $400 to buy one? My old md players has been working great for four years now. I hope my ipod does the same thing.

My perfect ipod would be a customer-replacable battery, if they come out with this, i'll buy one right away.

i got a 5gb the day they came out...the new ones are tempting, but isn't every new powermac etc tempting? eventually, when i *really* need the extra space i might think about it but for now i am happy with what i have.

i wish they'd make the battery user-replacable... then i'd be all over a 20 giger... but as is i'm running on a five and i'm waiting till it's absolutely dead before i even consider upgrading...

we'll see.

but SERIOUSLY.

we NEED to be able to fix the batteries... they just DIE!

i hate that.

I have the original 5GB model as well can't see myself upgrading anytime soon. I just keep very specific playlists on the iPod.

I have recently turned to manually managing the contents of the iPod because I started realising that iTunes has real issues with large libraries especially if files are all over a network.

Which is why I have very recently forked out for Audion 3.0 which is so much better.

I have thought about upgrading, but am holding out until I can actually afford it . Paying off the 5giger was painful enough

I have noticed my battery isnt holding a charge as well as it used to though. Hope that is covered under the CompUSA warranty I purchased.

Don't you think they'll be be some 3rd-party outfit out there that will replace the batteries after 3-4 years? It'll be out of warranty by then and then who'll care if you need to open it up?

I too, recently switched from a MD player that had a rechargable battery that ran pretty well for almost 5 years. Hoping to get the same out of my 5-gig iPod.
