Greetings all,
I'm thinking about retiring my Artemis (beige G3 All-In-One for education) and getting a new iBook (aka iceBook, iBook 2, TiBook Jr., etc.). I've got a 17" monitor that I use with my Windows box, and I'd love to use it w/ the new iBook. What's the best USB KVM switch out there? The most affordable? I'm leaning towards the MoniSwitch from Dr. Bott; can anyone suggest anything better?
As it stands, I've got my Artemis on the right side of my desk, the 17" monitor attached only to the PC on the left, and two keyboards & mice. I'd like to move the monitor front and center, and use my IntelliMouse on on both computers instead of the standard PC mouse. I'm also trying to decide on a good USB keyboard to share; I'm leaning towards the Apple Pro Keyboard, unless someone can suggest something better.
So, any suggestions on KVMs or keyboards?
Thanks in advance,
-Ster

I just purchased a IOGear Mac & PC 2 computer KVM. It was $109 at Frys electronics. I will install it tomorrow at work and let you know.

I installed the KVM today. As expected the Mac handled switching just fine. However the Win2K did not. When switching back from the Mac to PC the PC would not respond to the Keyboard or mouse.

Hmm. I'd be interested to hear if you ever get this working more effectively. I have a similar setup at home, and have been thinking about getting a usb switch for keyboard/mouse as well. I currently have a monitor switch which works to my satisfaction, but still have two keyboards which take up a lot of room on my small desk.

Grrr... To make matters worse I find the Mac locking up when switch back to it. I have sent a message to tech support.

My contact at the campus computer store suggested the IOGear, but I recalled reading something about the problem Roofus described (Thanks for the info, BTW, Roofus). Anyone out there use the Dr. Bott?

As it happens, I think I'm going to hold off on the iBook till after they start pre-loading OS X, on the (extremely) off chance they make some type of hardware change before then. A co-worker specifically reminded me that the ATi video subsystem might be pokey with Quartz/Aqua.
But then again, they'll probably have optimized drivers by pre-load...
But I might want to wait for first-run kinks to get weeded out...
But then again, I'd be real handy to have a laptop during summer school (switched from Chemical Engineering to Computer Science, and trying to make up lost time)...
But pre-loaded machines will have to have 128MB RAM built-in, as opposed to me having to order some...

Hmmm... I'll have to debate this with myself! :-)

If your sharing Mac's It think you would be OK. Seems to be more of a problem with the windows machine (big surprise!)
