Hi, I am going to order myself a new G4 Cube sometime this week, but I am not sure if I want to get the 15" flat panel or the 17" crv. I do a lot of gaming, and I have heard some people say that the 15" flat panel "ghosts" with games, and some people say that it works fine. So my question is, should I spend the little extra money to get the flat screen or not??
In case anyone needs to know this to answer my question, my cube will be a 500 mhz with the nvidia geforce 2 mx, ordering it with 128 mb of ram but I will install my own additional 256 mb, and I like to run my games at at least 1024 x 768 resolution. Thanks in advance!!

I just bought a new cube and flat screen. So far it seems fine in Unreal Tournament and Quake. I don't notice any ghosting. I do find it a little small though, but the space savings are nice. I'd concider looking into a cheap 17 flat screen though.

The 15" flat panel is ALMOST the same size as the 17" CRT, since the monitors are measured by different standards.
I noticed very, very faint ghosting in UT with a G4/500. It was almost too slight to even see, unless you were searching hard for it (as I was). I found the LCD to look far better than the 17" CRT, since the screen has a much "sharper" feel to it, and colours seem much more vibrant. This might not be good if you play around with Photoshop a lot, but in games things look great.
My only question is with high-FPS games, like QuakeIII running on a 533 (I posted a thread on this in the Games forum some weeks ago). UT, of course, averages out at about 40-45 FPS in open levels on my LAN, since I have left some graphics options a little high. If you run QuakeIII and start hitting 60 or 70 + FPS, will the ghosting problem be more evident????
I'm curious as well, 'cause that Cinema Display haunts me in my sleep.....

I have the LCD for 6 months. No ghosting, ever.
This sucker rules.
P.S. I am a designer and the colour is perfect on the thing also.

I just got a Cube and the 17" CRT. I decided to go with the CRT for several reasons. It was cheaper and gives one extra inch of viewable area. It may not seem like much, but I can apprecaite the extra inch.
Though, the biggest reason I went with the CRT was because it can do screen modes above 1024x768. The flat panel display is limited to 1024x768 as a max I believe. You might take that to mind.
Best luck and enjoy your Cube. I know I am!

Actually the two displays have the same physical viewing area. Go ahead, measure it. I have and was amazed too!

The CRT, however, supports resolutions up to 1600x1200 AND it's still crisp clear.

...but at high resolution the refresh rate drops. This might be below your confort level.

bitfly, I will be going into graphic design studies, from all I have heard, LCD's do not give proper color reproduction. I love the 15" LCD and have been looking at it, do you do any commercial work with it?
thanking you in advance ...

Well I wouldn't recommend it for very very picky Print work. And I mean really picky. I do 10 hours of web and print design on it every day and the colours are actually better then the 17' CRT.
Most LCD's are garbage, but everyone knows that Apple ones are the best. There is a huge difference between laptop and desktop LCD's though. Desktops can use more power and are bigger so they are much sharper and have better contrast and colour.
In summery, you will never have a colour problem unless you do very serious print. You will find that the 15' LCD is perfect for web and has a better sharpness and contrast then the 17' CRT. I highly recommend it.

I have had both, and own the LCD right now. It is MUCH better than the CRT was (and hence more expensive). You might be able to go to a higher resolution, but if you get the chance to compare them side by side, with the CRT and 1280xwhatever and the LCD at 1024x768 - I guarantee if you've got the money you will buy the LCD. It is amazing, bright, crisp, takes up so little space... you won't be disappointed.
I've seen about a half dozen CRT's, and all had fuzzy corners, horizontal lines wold wave up and down which were not fixable with the geometry settings.... just not worth the money IMO. Maybe I've just been unlucky and seen a bad batch or something... I don't know. But from someone who has owned both, my vote definately goes to the LCD.

Used the 15" LCD on a Cube/450/256/Rage128. The pair definitely make up the most gorgeous computer system on the planet right, the colors are amazingly bright, you're left with a great deal of desk space. I never noticed an ghosting on my evals. That's the positive.
The negative is that scaling down the resolution and/or color depth on the 15" LCD (as with any LCD) is only emulating the lower resolution and therefore you lose a great deal of pixel clarity and sharpness. In games such as Q3A or UT i found this blurring of pixels to be unacceptable and therefore highly recommend going with a video card capable of driving your games at the LCD's native resolution/depth of 1024x768 at 32bit color. The problem is that even the best graphics card will not drive ALL games at your display's highest resolution/depth (even if most games do now). And it is for this reason most hardcore gamers will tend to opt for a standard CRT either way. If games occupy more than 50% of your time or you live in Photoshop i'd go with the CRT. For most everyone else, the LCD is a dream display.

The 15" LCD is indeed lovely, but the ergonomics are not nearly as good as the previous LCD monitor. That monitor could be adjusted up and down and tilted to fit your viewing requirements. This one is one size and position fits all and that doesn't work for some people. One of my consulting clients had to have a black box built to lift the monitor up so she didn't get a headache. Another client had the monitor removed and replaced with the older one for viewing comfort. Apple opted for looks over good viewing design on this one!

I have a G3 Pro and use the DVI StudioDisplay LCD through a Radeon PCI card and LOVE it... the color is georgeous and I never have a problem with ghosting. It is definitely one of the best looking LCDs I have ever seen and much better than the one on my iBook. However, personally I definitely prefer the design of the DVI LCD over the new ADC LCD... it sits waaaay too low for me. (FYI smalldog.com has the DVI LCDs available new & refurb right now). Also since I like high resolution I recently replaced my 17" Studio Display with a SGI 1600SW flat pannel (1600x1024 resolution, widescreen) which is kind of like a mini-Cinema display (and it has height adjustment unlike the Cinema plus a three year warranty!). It too is great looking and after using these two I swear I will NEVER return to CRTs. Trust me, unless you're doing print work that has to be 100% color acurate, you will be VERY happy with an LCD... especially a high quality one like an Apple or SGI.

I have the 15 inch, don't bee fooled by the small size, its very sharp and easy on the eyes for long use, much better than any CRT, the digital connection ADC makes it even better, colors with photoshop are great, but webdesign is not my cup of tea.

Thanks for all your input. Just so you know, I've had my 15" display for about two weeks now and it is absolutely beautiful. Unreal Tournament looks better than ever, it's like playing it for the first time all over again!
