just a quick question to anyone who may or may not know. i was checking out the new g4s on apple's site and i read alot about them from sites mentions here , and i also watched steve jobs public address at seybold. and what i am confused on is the whole system board issue. they are taking a g3 system board and putting a g4 proccessor on it for the first run. does that mean the 400,450,and 500 all are based on this "YIKES!" project? or is it just the 400? and if these are all based on that project how long after this will they release the sawtooth systems. and what do you think the price difference will be. i dunno it all just sounded kind of confusing to me. i want to make sure i don't run out and get a g4 only to find if i would have waited a few months i could have gottenthe g4 with the new system board technology at the same price.
any help would be appreciated
thanks

I've had the same concerns as you about the G4 400 motherboard. Here's the way I understand it. . . The G4 400 will first be released on the Yosemite motherboard, the same motherboard as the current G3 B&W Macs. The G4 450 & 500 will be released on the Sawtooth motherboard in about a month or two. An easy way to tell what motherboard your getting it to look at the ATI video specs. If the ATI is listed as a PCI interface, the motherboard will be the older Yosemite. If the ATI is listed as a AGP interface, the motherboard will be the newer Sawtooth. I believe Apple will phase out the Yosemite once the Sawtooth boards are in full production, and then the entry level G4 will also have the new and improved Sawtooth. From what I've read, the Sawtooth has video, RAM, hard drive, USB and FireWire improvements over the older Yosemite motherboards. I think I'll wait for about a month or two, and get a 400 G4 with the Sawtooth. I just hope Apple can keep up with demand, so I don't have to wait until next spring. . .
